The Blizzard of 1966 in Washington, D.C.

What would you do if you were attending a wedding in the middle of the winter and found yourself confronted with a sudden, unanticipated blizzard? Even worse, what if you were out of town and faced a long journey home? And even much worse, what if you were part of the wedding party? Suddenly frightened from the amount of snow tumbling from the sky, would you leave the celebration abandoning hosts and guests to fend for themselves? Or, would you act as if you were not afraid of the terrifying events and kept on with the party?

On January 29, 1966, Rebecca Butler and Khalil Khoury were faced with just such a life-changing event? The snow storm, a blizzard really, descended by surprise, a completely uninvited guest, right in the middle of their wedding celebration. Partying happily inside the church hall, no one noticed the quickly falling snow piling up suddenly outdoors, until it was almost too late to escape. It certainly was too late for most of Rebecca and Khalil’s family and friends. The blizzard of January 1966, was the worst snow disaster to hit the D.C. area in almost 50 years.

What happened in the next ten days changed the lives of many of the guests at this memorable event. Wedding Tales tells the story of these remarkable events. Rebecca and Khalil find themselves stranded on a plane in the middle of the runway in National Airport. Rebecca’s family is stranded for days in one of the most elegant, but expensive hotels in Washington, D.C. Many of Khalil’s family are stranded for days on end at his sister’s house in rural Maryland. Other family members and friends of both the bride and groom have remarkable stories of courage to share.

In this fateful event, Wedding Tales is born. Rebecca’s family tells stories of how their ancestors fled from Germany in the mid-nineteenth century to settle in America. Their heartfelt and touching journey will fill your heart with lasting images of courage and endurance in the face of incredible hardships. You’ll both laugh and cry tears of joy and sorrow as Khalil’s family also share their stories of how their ancestors escaped the most horrific tragedies at the hands of marauding, renegade Turks during the close of the Ottoman Empire in the middle to the end of the nineteenth century. In addition to all these uplifting tales, are the stories of how Rebecca and Khalil personally face the challenges ahead of them during the frightful snowfall.

Sharing these delightful tales, sometime bitterly sad, sometimes delightfully funny, you will be changed forever. Your challenges and hardships may not be as frightening as those you find in Wedding Tales. However burdensome they seem to you at the moment, the courage you will take with you from Wedding Tales will help you face them with a renewed resolve. Share Rebecca & Khalil’s journey of love as told in Wedding Tales, Book One: Love’s Journey, soon to be released (Launch Date, early May, 2015).
